Meet our intern, Leila

Who are you?

I am a Junior at Gustavus Adolphus College. I grew up in Burnsville, Minnesota. I am Political Science major as well as a Gender, Women, and Sexuality Studies & Sociology and Anthropology double minor. My mother is Japanese and my father is Pakistani. I also have an older brother.

What do you do?

Most of my time is spent studying. During the school year I work at Gustavus Technology Services. In my free time I participate in Gustavus Women’s Rugby and hang out with friends.

What has your experience at CAPM been like?

It has definitely exceeded my expectations. All the staff has been absolutely wonderful. When first coming in I didn’t think I would be as involved as I have been. I really enjoyed being able to go to the youth leadership retreat and working at the Dragon Festival. It was wonderful to see how much an experience like that means to the youth and community.

What motivates you?/What are your passions?

Growing up I saw quite a few people bullied for being different. If it was for their sexual orientation, ethnicity, or because of stereotypes. I decided my senior year of high school that I would find a way to do something about it even if it was in a small way. If I could make it better for at least one person it would be absolutely worth while. I hope to work in a field related to minority rights either regarding women, ethnic, or sexual orientation.

Anything else you would like people to know about you?

Soccer has been the love of my life. Until last summer I played year around since I was six years old. I have now found a place in rugby. I may be small, however, that doesn’t mean you should underestimate me. I don’t think I’ll ever be able to describe how much soccer and rugby means to me. To be able to meet the amazing people I have and memories I have made along the way has left me very, very fortunate. It has shaped me and can never be replaced.

The CAPM staff would like to give a big thank you to Leila for helping us over the summer. Her last day will be August 23rd before she returns to continue her studies at Gustavus. We wish you a safe trip and we’ll miss you!

Meet our intern, Devon

devon

Who are you?

My name is Devon Provo and I am 19 years old. I grew up in Como Park of Saint Paul, but I now attend Occidental College in Los Angeles, where I study Urban & Environmental Policy. I am interested in community organizing and exploring the ways in which cities and quality of life can be improved.

What do you do?

This summer in particular I have been trying to learn how to cook (much to my family’s dismay). I also sing in a Glee Club, hang out with friends and pretend I am flexible enough for yoga poses. At CAPM I have been assisting with the 2011 Education Report. Researching this project has been both eye-opening and rewarding, and I will keep what I have learned in mind as I finish my own educational pursuits.

What has your experience at CAPM been like?

I’ve had a wonderful experience at CAPM. I have been engaged in important work and learned a lot while utilizing my own skills and exploring my areas of interest. The staff members have been so welcoming and I am truly grateful to be a participant in their work.

What motivates you? What are your passions?

I am motivated by the amazing changes I see in the world every day. Rockets, hybrid cars and entire countries around the world joining together in protest… these are the things that inspire me. In addition to urban planning, I am passionate about nature, history and politics.

What else would you like us to know about you?

Despite living in Los Angeles, I stay loyal to Minnesota and do not cheer for the Lakers.

The CAPM staff would like to give a big thank you to Devon for helping us over the summer. Her last day will be next Monday before she returns to CA. We wish you a safe trip and we’ll miss you!

Meet our intern, Christina

Christina_Wong

Who are you?

I am a 2L at William Mitchell. I grew up in Kingston, Jamaica but am originally from Miami, Florida. I was involved in the Asian Student Alliance and Asian Pacific Awareness Month Committee at Macalester College. I was an Asian Studies and History major with a focus on China. A bit on my family background: my father was born in Hong Kong, and my mother was born in Dongguan, China. My parents are both Hakka-Chinese, but we mainly speak Cantonese at home.

I’m the first person in my family to graduate from college. Being able to attend law school has definitely been a blessing, and it’s been a great experience so far.

What do you do?

Most of my time is dedicated to law school, but I have been able to volunteer and keep connected with the community. I still keep in contact with my Macalester professors and lend a hand whenever they need it. And of course, I enjoy spending time with my friends.

What has your experience at CAPM been like?

So far it’s been a blast interning at CAPM! The office isn’t very big and the staff is small, but the work that’s done is amazing. Other than being a liaison to the governor and advocating for Asian-Americans in Minnesota, CAPM also does a lot of work with the youth. It’s never too early to reach out and get kids engaged in their community.

I also enjoy the conversations we have at CAPM. We come together for lunch and just chat. We talk about the projects we’re working on, things that are happening at the Capitol, and whatever just happens to be on our minds at the time. Though I haven’t been interning for very long, I am comfortable here. There’s definitely a very supportive atmosphere.

What motivates you?/What are your passions?

Because I grew up in Jamaica, I learnt to be grateful and content with very little. So what motivates me is service to other people. My main reason for attending law school is to, one day, provide legal help to those who need it but can’t access it. Another thing that motivates me is my family. Nothing is more important to me than the health and well-being of my parents.

Anything else you would like people to know about you?

I really enjoy art and anything creative. Here’s a short list of what I dapple in: I take photos and used to make films for fun. I play the electric guitar (but I read tabs, so you’ll probably question my music credibility). I love cooking, but I love eating more. Whenever I travel, I always look forward to the gastronomic adventures I’ll have.

Meet our intern, Dorothy

Hello CAPM blog readers. For the summer, we’ll be introducing the volunteers and interns who have been helping us behind the scenes at the office. This week, meet Dorothy, who is our media intern.

Who are you?
Born a native Hmong Saint Paul Minnesotan, I have always had a deep passion in working with community members.  I am a young beautiful and blissful daughter, sister, and community organizer.

I am currently attending the University of Wisconsin – La Crosse with a major in Communication Studies emphasizing in Broadcast and Digital Media, and a minor in Professional and Organizational Communication.  I have received numerous awards and high praises for her activism work in tackling issues on racism in America, and her involvement within the La Crosse Asian community.

What do you do?
Well, I do many things.  Above all, I like to do things that will help others.  After that, I do things that I love which consists of the following: eating, learning, mentoring students, reading books about and on history, dancing in heels, sleeping, doing things in the snow, and stargazing.

What I most enjoy learning about are different ways of life, languages and cultures.  By learning, I hope to make the world a better place through my participation.

What has your experience at CAPM been like?
My experience at CAPM has been delightful!  I feel so blessed to have met and worked with such intelligent and self-motivated Asian Americans that are passionate about helping others.  It inspires me to keep learning and become better rounded as a person for social change.

Through CAPM, I have also been given the opportunity to meet Asian American artists and leaders in Minnesota.  The experiences and relationships that I’ve made through CAMP will go far with me wherever life takes me.

But I have to say, what I’ve enjoyed most about CAPM is meeting all of the beautiful and intelligent Asian American WOMEN.  It has been the most empowering part of interning for CAPM.  So thank you, thank you, thank you!

What motivates you? /What are your passions?
In short, “When the power of love overcomes the love of power, the world will know peace.”

And my awesome family!  My parents worked very hard for their children; I just want to give back to them and do well in life by helping others that are less fortunate.

Anything else you would like people to know about you?
I love eating POP ROCKS!!

Meet our intern, Michelle

Hello CAPM blog readers. For the summer, we’ll be introducing the volunteers and interns who have been helping us behind the scenes at the office. This week, meet Michelle, who is our communications intern.

Who are you?
My name is Michelle Sham. I am 20 years old. I was born in Singapore and grew up there for 16 years before coming to the United States to complete my education. I am of Chinese descent, but I have never been to China before. English is my first language, as I was taught British English in Singapore, and Mandarin is my second language.

What do you do?
I am a senior at the University of Minnesota (Twin Cities) with an Individualized major. My concentrations are Mass Communication, Political Science and Korean. Frankly, I am afraid of going out into the world after graduation. I do not know what I want to do as an occupation yet and even worse, I do not know where to start looking. However though, I have a great interest in the North-South Korean conflict, human rights and climate change.

What motivates you?/What are your passions?
My motivation comes from my will to want to make changes and to stand up for the ones that are at a disadvantage. Whether they are incredible marine animals whose homes we are polluting, helpless animals that we are killing in masses inhumanely for their fur, our beautiful planet that we are mercilessly exploiting, or people, like you and me, living with no basic human rights under a tyranny- I feel the obligation to want to correct things to improve their quality of life.

What has your experience at CAPM been like?
My experience at CAPM has been eye opening. In CAPM, I am surrounded by young and motivated people who help people everyday. There is a drive to want to influence policy making, inspire people and to essentially improve the lives of Asian Americans in Minnesota. Although I have only been with CAPM since Febuary 2011, I have already learnt so many things. I am very glad to be able to intern at CAPM, and I look forward to helping them help the Minnesotan community.

Anything else you would like people to know about you?
My philosophy in life is simple. Life is short, so be happy and spread only compassion and love.
